forward Saturday afternoon, Maine South (34-8) complet its improbable stream to the boys volleyball state title, stunning favored Naperville North 25-21 25-19 in van of more than 1,500 fans at Hoffman Estates.
"This has been the best weekend of my life," said Kelly who contributed six kills to his team's trophy-hoisting effort. "Prom last night [Friday], winning state today, graduating tomorrow. It's an unbelievable feeling. This is the way I wanted to fare out."
Juniors Teddy Adamczyk and Kristaps Staks helped make the weekend more memorable for Kelly and associate seniors Andrew Juiris (three kills), Mike Ros (five), Mike Thomas (two kills, 10 service points) and Cullen McChristian.
Adamczyk finished with a match-high 10 kills, and Staks contributed 21 assists and brace kills.
"I definitely think we had a different mind-set than when we played them at the Downers southern tournament," Adamczyk said. "When we saw them there, we were a little intimidated. We were a whole different team today. Today, we could take forward anybody."
Naperville North (37-4) which relentless behind 21-12 in the secondary game, rallied briefly to complete within 22-17. But Adamczyk lock up the door with a kill facing a block on match point. David Pociask and Eric Ball combined for solitary eight kills for the Huskies.
"It was almost like `The Twilight Zone' disclosed there," Naperville North coach Roger Strausberger said. "They played an unbelievable match. I don't think they made a single error. We talked about making other teams play complete to beat us, and tonight Maine toward the south played their best match."
Naperville North reached the title game with a 25-22 25-23 win across Buffalo Grove in the semifinals. Pociask had 12 kills, and Casey Gioia had 22 assists for the Huskies. Mike Will had 10 kills and three aces for the Bison.
Maine southerly advanced by rallying from an 18-13 deficit in the third game to top Glenbard East 23-25 25-21 25-23 Kelly l the Hawks with 13 kills, Adamczyk added 12 and Ros had 11 Mario Jez had 15 kills for the Rams.
In the third-place game, Jez (18 kills) and Barrett Segraves (12) powered Glenbard East (33-9) to a 27-29 25-22 25-22 victory through the whole extent of Buffalo Grove (30-7).
Will l the Bison with 19 kills, and Tim Falknor had 29 assists.
