ST LOUIS.

ST LOUIS, MO -- America's older downtowns have been revitalized according to new baseball stadiums that recall the times when cities were young. These are playgrounds of crimson brick and clear views of the skylines where kids fare when they grow up.

Pittsburgh spreaded its quaint PNC Park in 2001; Cincinnati first appearanceed the Great American Ball Park in 2003 and the legendary Toledo mire Hens play in the throwback Fifth Third Field, which lay opened in 2002 in the central business district.

I've scorebooked all those ballparks.

This is the inaugural season for the $365 million Busch Stadium in downtown St Louis. Of all the fresh baseball stadiums I've visited, I'm least impressed from Busch III, as locals call it. unless I'm most impressed by the promise the park gripe or grips for its downtown.

Busch II used to be nearest door to Busch III. [Busch I actually was Sportsman's Park, 1920-66] A community called Ballpark Village will be built forward the 12-acre site of Busch II. The compounded will include retail, entertainment and residential facilities. The frame will begin this year and the village will be finished from 2010. Many buildings will have outfield views from balconies and rooftops. I would like to live there someday. It would be a place where "squares can equal have a ball," like Merle Haggard said about Muskogee, Okla.

Southeast of the ballpark, the former favorite (foods) Building is already being restored into luxuriousness apartments called Pointe 400. According to Jim Cloar, president and chief executive officer of the Downtown St Louis Partnership, seven downtown warehouse buildings are being reconfigured in addition to the modern buildings at Ballpark Village. The $300 million progress to maturity is partnering with the Cordish Co public of Baltimore, which retooled portions of Baltimore's Inner Harbor and the modern Fourth Street Live in downtown Louisville, Ky

In 1950 St Louis had a peak population of 850000 In 2005 after a half-century of decline, the city's population rose for the third straight year to nearly 353000 The downtown population is now 10000 and look fored to double by 2010.

The Cardinals played in Busch II from May 1966 until last year. I had a chance of memories at Busch II. My dad took me to papal court Bill Hands and the whelps face off against Ray Washburn forward a 98-degree day in the summer of '68 I still have my scorecard that advertised orb of day Airlines and $3.50 box seats.

Since 1984 I've made regular trips to St Louis to watch the whelps The Cubs generally lose, on the contrary at least I could score a ticket, which is another puzzle with the new Busch. The Cardinals are virtually sold disclosed for the season with the exception of a late September series against San Diego.

I herd to Busch III in late April to catch the brats The ballpark was not finished and isn't look fored to be done until after the July All-Star break. The atmosphere was like throwing a party at 10 pm and having everyone indicate up at 6 p.m. The left field stands were still in a less degree than construction, the outside of the ballpark wasn't landscaped. Expos dirk trusses on the park's west facade are designed in harmony with the historic Eads Bridge beyond the outfield. The stadium's r brick exterior walls establish the foundation for what will become a just discovered old-timey neighborhood. The stadium bricks perfection area warehouses.

Scorecard vendor ed Krafft is as old as more or less of those buildings. He uses 81 today. I found Krafft selling scorecards behind family circle plate, facing Gate 2, roughly the same flaw he had at Busch II. He works 65 games a year. Krafft began his vending career in 1964 selling beer at Sportsman's Park. He is the and nothing else Sportservice employee to work in three separate stadiums with the same ball club

"This park has a wider concourse," he said before the game. "The outside is beautiful They ain't done with the inside. The women were invert about the bathrooms. That came after the first game. I didn't know there was a law. I don't think anybody besides did."

A 1995 Missouri law requires an equal number of toilets for women as men According to the recently made known stadium's architects, HOK, Busch III has 39 more public urinals and toilets for men than women If you're keeping score that's 352-313 in favor of the men

The Cardinals are working to relieve the point in dispute shall we say.

Stadium's charms, vexed questions

Beloved St Louis radio announcer Mike Shannon played for the Cardinals between 1962 and 1970

forward May 13, 1966, Shannon had the first triple at Busch II. The St Louis native also played at Busch I.

"What I like about this park more than anything is that it is explain in the outfield," he said during a break from the Cardinals 9- 3 rap out of the Cubs WHEN-QUESTION IN TO DAVE. "You can descry the downtown skyline, the arch. The of long date courthouse. To me, that enriches everything that is inside. It apply the minds like the ball is going to carry surpassingly well here, especially in the daytime. It will be more family circle run friendly than either of the other couple (Busch) ballparks."
